The Lewis Foundation is a charity which helps cancer patients feel less lonely in hospitals. Every Friday night, with the help of their volunteers, they provide free gift packs at Northampton General Hospital.
After Lee’s mother was diagnosed with cancer back in 2009, Lee noticed “how bored and sad some of the patients looked on the Talbot Butler Ward.” Shortly after that, Lee and his wife Lorraine decided to set up a charity and selflessly dedicate their time to helping cancer patients.
Besides that, they are also actively involved in fundraising. The first project was paying for televisions so people did not have to pay £10 a day or £35 a week to watch TV. They managed achieve their goal because back in 2014/15 Lorraine has raised the money by completing Tough Mudder and Rat Race-Dirty Weekend (20 miles and around 200 obstacles!). Due to that, with the money raised The Lewis Foundation managed to provide 11 TV and DVD players which went in the private rooms on Talbot Butler Ward in NGH.
The gift packs range from portable radios, puzzles, books, pamper packs and many more. Those items were very appreciated by patients who could potentially spend a lot of their time in hospitals.
The Lewis Foundation also provides packs to day outpatients receiving treatment at Oncology Ward at BMI Three Shires Hospital in Northampton, Haemotology and Oncology at Northampton General Hospital, Haemotology and Oncology at Milton Keynes University Hospital Trust, St Crispin's Retirement Village in Northampton.
Regardless of whether the cancer patients are male or female, these people want to make others aware that support is out there, even with gift packs and fundraising activities, as they mean a lot to patients on the wards, keeping them occupied for the time being because those are the things that can brighten someone's day.
